Symmetry led a regional study for FCDO and British International Investment analyzing 10 Southeast Asian case studies on private climate adaptation finance. The work identified enabling policy and regulatory conditions, assessed replicability across ASEAN, and produced recommendations to scale private investment in adaptation across the region.

There’s a pressing requirement to mobilize the expertise, innovation, and financial resources of the private sector to develop new technologies, goods, and financial instruments that encourage investment in climate change adaptation. Symmetry has been involved in various research projects investigating obstacles and potential solutions to expand private financing for climate adaptation.

AMRU RICE: DEVELOPING A BUSINESS PLAN FOR SCALING REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE IN CAMBODIA

In partnership with SIIP and Mekong Strategic Capital, Symmetry produced a Business Plan and investment model for AMRU’s Regenerative Agriculture business
strategy in Cambodia. As part of this assignment, we also explored the feasibility of a carbon project to access carbon revenues as part of their switch to regenerative practices.

SCALING FINANCE FOR NDPE COMPLIANT PALM OIL PRODUCERS AND MILLS IN INDONESIA

Conducted a legal and financial feasibility assessment of three No-deforestation, No-peat, and No-exploitation compliant palm oil financing options for smallholders and mills. Produced two reports advising IDH on the best option to scale palm oil financing in Aceh, Indonesia.

PIPELINE DEVELOPMENT FOR CLIMATE RESILIENT INVESTMENTS

Supported the origination, assessment, and development of bankable investment deals in forestry, agriculture, water, and biodiversity sectors across Southeast Asia and Africa. We assisted companies involved in inclusive forestry plantations, integrated shrimp-mangrove, agroforestry, rice seed agribusiness, peatland restoration and carbon, regenerative agriculture, and more.

MICROFINANCE INSTITUTIONS AND CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

Advised Abler Nordic (formerly NMI) in identifying investment opportunities within the field of climate change adaptation and the pros and cons of establishing a Climate Investment Fund. The team identified a potential pipeline of investible Financial Institutions (domestic banks, microcredit institutes) in South Asia and East Southern Africa who sought to integrate climate risks into their lending portfolio

STIMULATING BUSINESSES TO SUPPLY CLIMATE RESILIENT GOODS AND SERVICES IN ACP COUNTRIES

We produced a series of papers and held webinars addressing the topic of ‘enabling the business environment to attract climate smart investment across Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific countries’. Under this assignment, we explored the use of different blended financial instruments to de-risk investment in the agriculture and water sectors.

UNLOCKING FINANCE TO DRIVE A SUSTAINABLE FOREST SECTOR IN VIETNAM

In Vietnam, access to finance has been limited for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the forest sector, particularly those in the early stages of their growth. The team undertook an assessment of the banking sector in Vietnam to provide recommendations on stimulating access to finance for SMEs and smallholder farmers in the forest sector.
