The team conducted a carbon feasibility study of the Ecozone Clean Cooking Program. This includes recommendations for the carbon project governance structure, ensuring effective oversight and management. The team also contributed to the strategic design of the upscaling phase of the Ecozone program, covering a much wider area of Nepal.

PEACE-RENEWABLE ENERGY CREDITS

UNICEF endeavours to explore innovative solutions to address the financing and implementation challenges associated with renewable energy, particularly in conflict-affected regions. The project introduces and leverages Peace Renewable Energy Credits – a specialized form of renewable energy credits.

HARNESSING CARBON MARKETS: DEVELOPING A ROADMAP FOR SNV

Developed a strategy and an action plan for SNV to tap into carbon markets, to mobilise additional finance and scale impact in their operations. We outlined the latest trends in the compliance and voluntary carbon markets and the risks and opportunities for SNV to engage at different stages of the carbon project development cycle. Follow up projects were also highlighted.

CARBON FINANCING FOR THE FOREST AND LAND USE SECTORS IN UGANDA

Given the fast-evolving landscape of carbon finance, there is a need for country-level assessments to understand how to capture multiple financing sources for their forest and other land use (FOLU) sectors. A member of the Symmetry team explored current carbon finance opportunities for the FOLU sectors in Uganda and outlined a roadmap to scale up carbon financing.

CARBON FINANCING FOR REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES

Symmetry evaluated the RA model against major carbon standards and methodologies, including VM0042, CDM-AMS-III.AU, and VERRA’s rice methodology. The assessment covered project applicability, boundaries, baseline comparison, additionality, risk analysis, financial viability, non-carbon benefits, and safeguard risks.

FOREST RESTORATION THROUGH MIXED-USE FORESTRY MODELS IN MALAYSIA
2021 and 2023
Explored carbon finance opportunities for Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Uses in Uganda, outlining a roadmap and recommended activities for the Ministry of Water and Environment to attract and scale up carbon financing. In a separate assignment we supported to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Malaysia, to develop a pipeline of investible NbS projects aligned to the National REDD+ Strategy

SOURCING MANGROVE CARBON PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

The team assessed the potential for blue carbon projects in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, PNG, and Cambodia. The study identified opportunities to work local communities of mangrove restoration as well as the shrimp sector on more sustainable supply chains and integrated mangrove-shrimp production.

EXPLORING BIODIVERSITY CREDITS IN VIETNAM
2022
A ‘Biodiversity Credit’ is an economic instrument used to finance activities that deliver net positive biodiversity gains such as protecting or restoring species, ecosystems, or natural habitats, through the creation and sale of biodiversity units. Symmetry undertook an assessment of options to introduce Biodiversity Credits in Vietnam.
